INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES
10. Environmental Health Challenges
6. Environmental Health Challenges
Environmental factors significantly influence public health in Nigeria, particularly in urban slums and rural areas.
- Pollution: Air pollution in major cities like Lagos contributes to respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis. Industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, and the lack of regulations on waste management exacerbate the issue.
- Water and Sanitation: Poor sanitation and lack of access to clean drinking water continue to contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever. Inadequate sewage systems in urban and rural areas increase the risk of disease outbreaks.
- Waste Management: In many parts of Nigeria, inadequate waste management systems lead to pollution and health risks, especially in overcrowded urban areas.
7. Mental Health
Mental health remains an under-addressed issue in Nigeria, with a high prevalence of conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.
- Prevalence: An estimated 40 million Nigerians suffer from mental health disorders, but only 10% receive proper treatment.
- Stigma and Access to Care: Mental health issues are often stigmatized, and there is limited access to mental health services, especially in rural areas. The shortage of trained mental health professionals and facilities further limits care.
- Awareness and Advocacy: Although there have been some efforts to raise awareness about mental health, significant work remains in addressing misconceptions and stigma associated with these conditions.
