INTRODUCTION TO CONTEMPORARY PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES
3. The History of Public Health and Its Evolution in Nigeria
Public health in Nigeria has evolved through different phases, influenced by traditional practices, colonial governance, and the post-independence development of national health policies. From the early days of indigenous health systems to the establishment of formal public health institutions and policies, Nigeria’s journey has been shaped by both internal and external factors.
Early History
Pre-Colonial Period:
Before the arrival of Western medicine, Nigeria’s indigenous communities had a well-developed system of traditional healthcare. Health practices were deeply rooted in culture and included the use of herbal medicine to treat various ailments. Traditional healers were often seen as the first point of contact for health concerns. In addition to herbal remedies, other forms of community health initiatives were practiced, such as communal efforts to ensure sanitation and manage local health crises. The Elderly and spiritual leaders played an important role in guiding and managing these practices.
