Globalization and its impact on international relations.
3. Globalization and State Sovereignty
One of the most significant impacts of globalization on international relations is its effect on state sovereignty. Traditionally, sovereignty meant that states had absolute authority within their territorial boundaries. However, globalization has challenged this notion by introducing global rules, norms, and institutions that influence domestic policies.
International organizations such as the United Nations (UN), World Trade Organization (WTO), and International Monetary Fund (IMF) play key roles in shaping global governance. States often have to comply with international agreements and standards, which can limit their independent decision-making. As a result, sovereignty is no longer absolute but is increasingly shared or pooled among states, particularly in areas such as trade, human rights, and environmental protection.
