Course Objectives

The objectives of this course are to:

  1. Explore the historical, ethical, and professional dimensions of nursing practice.
  2. Examine the role of nurses in health care delivery systems and their interaction with governmental and non-governmental health organizations.
  3. Introduce the nursing process and its application in patient care.
  4. Foster an understanding of nursing theories, models, and their practical relevance.
  5. Equip students with foundational nursing skills through practical demonstrations and laboratory exercises.

Module 1: The Nature and Evolution of Nursing as a Profession

  • Definition and attributes of nursing.
  • History and emergence of nursing as a profession.
  • Nursing associations and their roles in professional development.

Module 2: Concept of Health and Healthcare Delivery Systems

  • Definition of health and illness.
  • Levels of healthcare delivery (primary, secondary, and tertiary).
  • Contributions of government, non-governmental, and international organizations to healthcare delivery.
  • Socio-cultural context of health and diseases.

Module 3: Nursing Process and Care Plans

  • Outline and components of the nursing process:
    • Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
    • North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) list.
    • Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC).
  • Practical applications of the nursing process in patient care.

Module 4: Nursing Theories and Models

  • Introduction to nursing theories and their relevance to practice.
  • Application of nursing models in patient care.

Module 5: Ethics, Etiquette, and Scientific Basis of Nursing

Module 6: Core Nursing Skills

  • Comfort, safety, and hygiene in nursing care.
  • Practical nursing skills:
  • Bed making.
  • Bathroom and bed baths.
  • Food service.
  • Monitoring and recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure).

Module 7: Practical and Skills Acquisition

  • Laboratory demonstrations of nursing skills.
  • Hands-on practice sessions in preparation for clinical exposure.
