Course Objectives
The objectives of this course are to:
- Explore the historical, ethical, and professional dimensions of nursing practice.
- Examine the role of nurses in health care delivery systems and their interaction with governmental and non-governmental health organizations.
- Introduce the nursing process and its application in patient care.
- Foster an understanding of nursing theories, models, and their practical relevance.
- Equip students with foundational nursing skills through practical demonstrations and laboratory exercises.

Module 1: The Nature and Evolution of Nursing as a Profession
- Definition and attributes of nursing.
- History and emergence of nursing as a profession.
- Nursing associations and their roles in professional development.
Module 2: Concept of Health and Healthcare Delivery Systems
- Definition of health and illness.
- Levels of healthcare delivery (primary, secondary, and tertiary).
- Contributions of government, non-governmental, and international organizations to healthcare delivery.
- Socio-cultural context of health and diseases.
Module 3: Nursing Process and Care Plans
- Outline and components of the nursing process:
- Assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) list.
- Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC).
- Practical applications of the nursing process in patient care.
Module 4: Nursing Theories and Models
- Introduction to nursing theories and their relevance to practice.
- Application of nursing models in patient care.
Module 5: Ethics, Etiquette, and Scientific Basis of Nursing
- Values in nursing ethics and etiquette.
- Roles of nurses within ethical prescriptions.
- Understanding the scientific basis of nursing care.
Module 6: Core Nursing Skills
- Comfort, safety, and hygiene in nursing care.
- Practical nursing skills:
- Bed making.
- Bathroom and bed baths.
- Food service.
- Monitoring and recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure).
Module 7: Practical and Skills Acquisition
- Laboratory demonstrations of nursing skills.
- Hands-on practice sessions in preparation for clinical exposure.
- Lectures: Interactive sessions for theoretical understanding of concepts.
- Practical Demonstrations: Hands-on demonstrations of basic nursing skills in a laboratory setting.
- Role-Playing: Simulated scenarios to practice professional and ethical behaviors.
