Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the fastest-growing metabolic disorders worldwide, yet it remains largely preventable through simple but consistent lifestyle modifications. The disease occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. In many Nigerian communities, unhealthy dietary habits such as high consumption of refined carbohydrates (like white rice, yam, and pastries) and sweetened beverages, combined with physical inactivity, contribute greatly to this problem.
Adopting healthier habits can significantly reduce the risk. A balanced diet rich in fibersuch as beans, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and millet helps improve insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control. Replacing sugary drinks with water or unsweetened beverages, and moderating portion sizes, are also effective measures. Furthermore, engaging in at least 30 minutes of daily physical activity like brisk walking, cycling, or even traditional dancing enhances glucose utilization and maintains a healthy body weight
In my community, a local women’s fitness group organizes early morning aerobic sessions three times a week. Many members report improved stamina, weight loss, and better health check results, showing how consistent lifestyle changes can prevent T2DM and promote overall well-being.
