Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and impaired glucose regulation. It is largely preventable through evidence-based lifestyle modifications that promote optimal metabolic health. Key preventive strategies include adherence to a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and maintenance of a healthy body weight. A diet emphasizing high-fiber foods, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables while minimizing saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, and excessive sugar intake has been shown to improve glycemic control and reduce diabetes risk.

In my community, increasing participation in early morning jogging and community-organized aerobic sessions has become a practical approach to promoting physical activity. Additionally, the gradual shift from sugar-sweetened beverages to locally prepared alternatives such as unsweetened zobo and tiger nut drinks demonstrates positive behavioral change toward healthier nutrition.

Community-based health education programs that emphasize lifestyle modification, regular screening, and dietary awareness are essential in curbing the rising prevalence of T2DM in Nigeria. Such interventions are cost-effective and contribute significantly to improving population health outcomes.
